Free Burma

I ran into these group of students promoting UCLA's Mighty Mic concert that raises awareness about different humanitarian crises in the world. This year the concert will educate attendees about the crisis in Burma and raise funds for Burmese refugees. Read more (taken from Mighty Mic website):

"Burma is a country that has been crippled by a ruling military junta since 1962. Its civilian population has been forced to live under an oppressive rule and notorious government-sponsored violence. In East Burma the resident ethnic minorities are the target of a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing. This area of Burma has been labeled an "area of concern" by Genocide Intervention Network as human rights groups have reported documented evidence of ethnic minority groups being consistently targeted for acts of violence constituted as crimes against humanity. Yet Burma requries our attention not just because it is dangerously close to being declared a genocide, but because of the general oppressiveness of the regime: political dissidence is punishable by imprisonment and torture, forced labor is the primary labor resource in most government projects (such as major infrastructure like roads and bridges), Burma's health services rank 190th out of 191 nations. and kidnapping of children to train as soldiers is an accepted practice (there are as many as 70,000 to date). The outcry of pain by Burmese civilians is silenced by isolationism and the government's total refusal to allow the traffic of ideas, news, or even material assistance, such as the government refusal to allow international non-profit associations to enter the country to aid victims of the cyclone.

In Burma, it is the young people. It is the young people that have taken leadership in the struggle to take back their country. It is the students that have closed their books and set down their pens to take to the streets and take up the banners and chants. It is those barely out of adolescence that have always laid down their youths and laid down their lives in defiance of a violent, unjust, and corrupt government and now languish by the thousands in barren 8x10 cells as political prisoners, hide like hunted animals in the darkness of the jungles, or lie broken and bloody in unremembered graves.

We wish to honor their passion and sacrifices by presenting a concert of education and conscience at UCLA, highlighting the Burmese struggle. We will use innovative techniques not only at the concert, but throughout the school year in preparation for the concert. We will build an understanding throughout the year through cutting edge marketing methods, mid-scale cultural and political programs, and educational workshops for the staff and coalition student groups."

Prior to Class

For some reason Adobe Photoshop isn't working for me :( So it might be a while until I post another photo.

The above is Royce Hall, one of my favorite buildings on UCLA campus. I think it's starting to dwindle in my list though because our campus is constantly under construction.

Clouds Mountain Water

Taken from the Amtrak Thruway Bus on I-5 south towards Los Angeles. The water was so beautifully blue I felt the urge to steal some in the form of pixels.

I'm sad I spent Easter traveling and working because Easter is so much more than that. Hopefully I can spend my entire lifetime celebrating Easter. :)

One Out

So cliche right now, but guess which one's me. I blame PMS. And the Devil. That fool is crafty.

Grocery Bag

Another sepia one. Poorly composed, my bad.

Brown Fedora with Cream Blazer

Sorry it's been a while since the last update. To be honest, I haven't been snapping any photos at all lately. But I'm thinking about a lot of my favorite photos I've taken and realized that they are mostly of people. I think this means I enjoy taking portraits the most. It makes me want to invest in a DLSR so I can go around taking snapshots of people without them thinking I'm a creeper. Heh.

This one's a man at the Third Street Promenade. He's talented for sure with a lot of soul in his voice and hope in his heart.

Replication

Another flower! This is actually my replication of a photo I really adore. The photographer was kind enough to send me a glossy print and it now hangs on my wall. Of course my photo is nowhere near his photo's awesomeness.

Sorry for the lack of posts; life's been crazy lately. This is a daisy that I randomly (?) received from a girl on the way to class today. I think a campus organization were handing out daisies to celebrate International Women's Day. So, Happy International Women's Day everyone!

Thank you. (:

(P.S. new simple layout!)

After the Rain

It's a bummer when it rains in Los Angeles because my main mode of transportation is walking. But the great thing about the rain in LA is the after-effects: the sky is amazingly blue and beautiful. God is so faithful.

Colored Paper Colored Highlighter

I have a midterm tomorrow that I should take more seriously. Maybe. At least my study sheets look pretty so I'll want to look at my equations and proofs.

Moon Clouds

I was going to grayscale this photo but I ended up really liking the subtle blue amongst the pitch black.

Did you know the word lunacy comes from old hypotheses that the full moon caused people to act strangely?

Royce at Night

Royce Hall: One of my favorite buildings on UCLA campus, besides the Management buildings and their curves. Interesting how its imperfections make it beautiful.

A Row of Tents

While walking back to my dorm I found this outside of Pauley Pavillion, UCLA's home basketball center. These are people camping out for tomorrow's basketball game against USC.

So an honest confession: I know very very very little about sports, namely football and basketball. I may act like I know what's going on, but very rarely do I ever know what's going on when I watch a game. What I do know is...I love my school and our struggling basketball team. I grew to love watching basketball because of UCLA. And Final Four or not, I'm still a Bruin. (Haters need not reply.)

Night Market

The Taiwanese Club (or equivalent) had it's 2nd annual Night Market in our campus plaza today. I was very excited because Milk tea boba was within my reach and I find Taiwanese sausage tasty. But even better, a friend came to visit today before he would leave for a long period of time. My friend Kuan will be leaving for Japan in March for a teaching job. I'm usually horrible and keeping in touch because I try to avoid awkward as much as possible...but I'm really glad I said yes to this one.

One of my life goals is to be a non-awkward old friend. Meaning, if there's a friend I haven't seen in a while and I were to hang out with them, it wouldn't be awkward at all, but rather we would pick up right where we left off and have a grand ol' time. Lovely.

A Pillow and Prayer

Our ministry's annual winter conference is coming up this weekend and we are holding prayer meetings in our room specifically for the conference.

Maybe God is slowly answering that prayer for me to have a heart for these people again. (Maybe slowly isn't the right word because with God, His promises come at just the right time.) I've been so stubborn with this family of believers, but if I'd just give them a chance maybe I could see that we're all the same. We're all the same broken and flawed people seeking for the heart of the Almighty.

Studio Break

I spent a few hours yesterday recording a spoof song for our ministry's winter conference. It made me realize that I am not as good as an emcee as I'd like to be and perhaps I should get going on that.

The recording studio is actually a friend's closet with his fancy microphone hooked up to a macbook in the other room. Yes, we are pro.

Birthday Surprises Galore

This is the second birthday we've celebrated since returning to UCLA. Both were surprises. They were helpful in reuniting everyone so I got to see some people I haven't seen in a long time...and maybe that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

No Pictures Allowed

Megan and I at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. I got immediately yelled at after this picture was taken because the exhibit we were at did not allowed photography. Hmph. I guess we are quite the piece of art.

I'm back in Los Angeles and there are surely mixed feelings. I was very hesitant about returning to UCLA because...well that's a different story. ;) Let's just say I really miss the kids back home. They kept me sane. But I am thankful for a certain old-time friend that has helped me transitioned into the sanity that is UCLA/ICA/Rieber Vista/etc. She's encouraged me and entertained me and took care of me more than I could ever ask for, more than I deserve. God sure loves me.
